English Touring Opera returns with two great operas encompassing love, war and epic tragedy.
English Touring Opera return with one of Handel’s most celebrated works, Giulio Cesare, on Monday 13 March. A majestic opera in which the characters are driven to extreme feelings and actions, and in which the music strikes at the heart. A story of passion and revenge, featuring a treasure trove of great arias with immense dramatic intensity, the opera follows the events surrounding Julius Caesar’s conquest of Egypt, as well as his uneasy alliance and romance with fabled Egyptian queen, Cleopatra. Giulio Cesare will also feature members of Sheffield University Chamber Choir.
Lucrezia Borgia plays on Tuesday 14 March. A tragedy of great pathos, Donizetti created in Lucrezia one of his greatest roles. Renowned as one of history’s most infamous poisoners, she is a cunning strategist and a loving mother at the same time, a complex woman in a dangerous situation.
Each opera is performed on period instruments in partnership with the much-praised Old Street Band.
English Touring Opera comes to the Lyceum Theatre from Monday 13 – Tuesday 14 March. Tickets can be booked through the Box Office in person, over the phone on 0114 249 6000, or at sheffieldtheatres.co.uk.
