Indonesian dance music trio Weird Genius have teamed up with singer/songwriter Moi Yang for “Clock of Reincarnation 轮回之钟,” a new Chinese-language version of their viral hit “LATHI.” Listen HERE. “Clock of Reincarnation” continues the cross-cultural journey that their original track started by smashing together hedonistic EDM drops with traditional Indonesian instrumentation like gamelan. This release follows a December remix package featuring Morroccan-Dutch DJ R3HAB, Indonesia’s Sihk, and Taiwan’s RayRay. “LATHI” started as a bonafide hit at home, but hundreds of millions of streams later it’s become a truly global phenomenon.
“Clock of Reincarnation” adds a new dimension to the track’s genre-bending, border-blurring approach. Yang, an alum of The Voice China, offers a stunning performance at the center of Weird Genius’ club-ready instrumental, offering a foreboding, poetic story of heartbreak. As “blood occupies both eyes,” she worries about time running out and love floating out of reach. It’s emotional and gut-wrenching, and the crushing drops only underscore the drama.
This international version is a fitting celebration of “LATHI,” which has won the hearts of critics and fans alike since its release. Last year, Weird Genius won three awards for the song at the Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI) Awards—Best Song/Production, Best Dance Collaboration, and Best Sound Production. “LATHI” was the first dance track in 27 years to win the Best Song at the AMI’s. In 2020, the track reached #1 on Spotify in Indonesia and hit #2 on the Global Viral Charts. What’s more, the visceral “LATHI” visual spent 7 weeks as Indonesia’s #1 music video—it took nothing less than the return of Blackpink to knock it from the top slot.
Since Weird Genius started releasing music in 2016, they’ve accumulated over 100 million plays on Spotify, 280 million views on YouTube (105 million for “LATHI” alone), and over 600 million views on TikTok, all while staying true to their infectious and affecting brand of dance music. Recently the group released their rapidly growing League of Legends: Wild Rift collaboration single, “ALL IN,” featuring Singapore’s Tabitha Nauser.
Weird Genius have also had an impressive slate of live gigs over the last few years, playing at Bangkok’s Viral Fest, the main-stage of Jakarta’s SHVR, YouTube’s Fanfest Indonesia, and Bali’s Soundrenaline, as well as holding down supporting slots for the Chainsmokers and Yellow Claw. “Clock of Reincarnation” is a celebration of the continued success of “LATHI,” but it also hints at the overall goals of their music. They’re ready to reach listeners everywhere.
