Music Venue Trust (MVT), which represents hundreds of grassroots music venues, has announced the first lineup for the third National Lottery Revive Live Tour.
An extensive programme of live shows from emerging artists including Baby Dave, THUMPER, Vigilantes, Everything Everything, Tide Lines, Jamie Webster, Superlove, Coach Party, Enola Gay, THE GOA EXPRESS, DITZ and Kills Birds (more to be announced) will take place in grassroots music venues across the UK between June and September, with The National Lottery directly underwriting the touring and production costs.
The tour will also see headline artists performing special one-off shows to highlight the importance of grassroots music venues. Paolo Nutini will perform at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, Charli XCX will also play a show, following her Glastonbury appearance, Southampton’s 1865 will host a special Glastonbury-warm-up-show by Lianne La Havas, The Amazons will play a hometown show at Reading’s Face Bar and, postponed from its previous January date, The Coral will head to Blackpool’s Bootleg Social. Having played Nottingham’s 10,000 capacity Motorpoint Arena in 2021 Sleaford Mods have chosen the city’s 100 capacity Chameleon Arts Cafe for their Revive Live gig.
This summer there will also be a series of shows curated by champions of the grassroots music scene, including Chris Difford & Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze, to highlight new artists. Radio presenter Steve Lamacq has selected two five-piece bands to join the tour – Goa Express and Deadletter.
“I jumped at the chance of being involved in these Revive Live gigs because I’ve always loved seeing bands at small grassroots venues. There’s nothing quite like it anywhere else in live music. The venues have been through a massively difficult time and it’s thanks to The National Lottery that we can help support live music at this level” Lamacq explains. “I hope fans will enjoy the artists I’ve picked – Goa Express’ recent London gig was an absolute joy. Their songs have got grit and jangle and good hooks, and they just looked so at home on stage for a relatively young band, they were irresistible. Deadletter are tight, lyrically fascinating and provoking and their performance is incredibly compelling to watch.”
Speaking about the importance of the tour Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods said “Independent venues were the only places we played for the first two years of Sleaford Mods. They hold the histories and stories of all the great bands that have passed through so playing at these places isn’t just about your gig, it’s also about experiencing the venue and its particular piece of history. Andrew and I met at The Chameleon and played our first gig, and many more after, at The Chameleon. Without it we wouldn’t be where we are now. It encouraged us to never give up and never lied to us. It’s a realism we can’t lose.”
More than 10,000 tickets – or around half the capacity of these shows – will be gifted to National Lottery players, giving music fans the opportunity to enjoy great music in their local venue at an affordable price. Every National Lottery ticket-holder who buys a ticket will be invited to bring a friend for free – all they need to do to qualify for this offer is to show a National Lottery ticket or Scratchcard purchased in-store or online/via the National Lottery app when they attend the gig.
This third phase of this ground-breaking partnership follows the overwhelming success of The National Lottery Revive Live Tours in 2021 & early 2022 when headline artists including Sir Tom Jones, Sam Fender, Enter Shikari, Bastille and Frank Turner returned to their roots. Across the country 247 acts played 457 shows in front of more than 118,000 music fans with National Lottery players able to bring a friend for free, helping revive the UK’s grassroots live music sector following the Covid 19 pandemic.
The National Lottery will once again underwrite the full touring and production costs of artists participating as part of their ongoing commitment to the grassroots music sector.
