Failing to comply with the norm, The Elephant Trees are here to represent those that feel like they don’t belong. They’ve been sticking up for the underdogs circa 2016 and are now about to unleash their most ambitious, outlandish and downright exciting project to date. ‘Monachopsis’ is the debut EP from the Manchester-based 2-piece. The 5 tracks represent a culmination of life-experiences and experimental alternative indie-pop from Martha Phillips and Sam Hugh-Jones, and it’s set to land on Friday 15th November.
It’s been a long time coming, and perhaps is now needed more than ever; ‘Monachopsis’ is an unlabelled journey. There are no genre boundaries, rights or wrongs here, this is a pure and honest real-talk collection of tracks that bleed into one another both musically and subjectively. From the explosive, bouncing, riff-heavy lead single ‘Idiot,’ to the hair-raising slickness of ‘4100,’ to the overflowing energy and heart-pounding feel of ‘IDKWIWA (I Don’t Know What I Want Anymore),’ every element is open to interpretation. Controlled chaos from start to finish, ‘Monachopsis’ slips in and out of genres and defies any specific trends or scenes. The Elephant Trees are being who they want to be, and they want all of you to join them on that. At the helm of it all, Martha Phillips added:
“We’ve all felt a deep sense of monachopsis in our lives at some point, that’s less of an assumption and more of a fact. It’s human nature, and yet, we don’t talk about it. We’d like that to change, we’d like to smash that wall down and many others, bending genres and emotions and social norms and styles. None of this felt like a choice, more a need to create something that dips and flows and halts and crashes just like people do, just like thoughts and feelings, and encourage others to let themselves do the same.”
Renowned for an incredible ruckus of a live show, The Elephant Trees sit somewhere in the middle of fiery and fun – both on and off the www. Across 2019 alone they’ve performed at Isle Of Wight, Bingley Weekender and Liverpool Sound City, not to mention supporting the likes of Bang Bang Romeo. King No-One, Larkins, Lottery Winners, Orchards and many more. Flexing their live muscle across the country and beyond is now something of the norm, and they’re about to showcase their new EP on the road throughout November.
