The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse

The Masterworks division of Sony Music Entertainment is releasing on 23^rd December 2022 the beautiful original soundtrack by acclaimed composer, Isobel Waller-Bridge to the eagerly-anticipated animated short film adapted from the bestselling book ‘The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse’ by much-loved author, artist and illustrator, Charlie Mackesy.

The film is coming to BBC ONE and BBC iPlayer in the UK and Apple+ this festive season and features an incredible array of talent including Tom Hollander as ‘The Mole’, Idris Elba OBE as ‘The Fox’. Gabriel Byrne as ‘The Horse’ and newcomer Jude Coward Nicholl as ‘The Boy’.

A story of kindness, friendship, courage and hope for all ages, ‘The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse’ takes the audience on a poignant and heartfelt adventure following the four friends as they journey together in the Boy’s search for home, all underpinned by Waller-Bridge’s delightful and captivating score, performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra under the baton of Geoff Alexander.

Isobel Waller-Bridge is an award-winning composer, known for her scores for film, television and theatre, alongside her work in electronic and contemporary classical music.  Her soundtrack work includes ‘Fleabag’, ‘Black Mirror’ and ‘Roar’ for television and ‘Emma’ and ‘Munich : The Edge of War’ for film.  Her theatre credits include ‘The Son’, ‘Woyzeck’, ‘Blood Wedding’ and ‘Knives in Hens’.  She has also collaborated with fashion houses Alexander McQueen and Simone Rocha and with principal ballerina at the Royal Opera House, Francesca Hayward.

Matthew Freud presents a Charlie Mackesy film, produced by Emmy Award winner and Academy Award nominee Cara Speller of NoneMore Productions and Emmy Award winner J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella of Bad Robot Productions.  Directed by Peter Baynton and Charlie Mackesy, the film is adapted from the original book in collaboration with Jon Croker.  The film is executive produced by Jony Ive and Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson.

First published in 2019, Charlie Mackesy’s book ‘The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse’ quickly became an international bestseller and has since sold over eight million copies worldwide and is celebrated as the bestselling UK non-fiction hardback since records began.

Also accompanying the release of the film and the soundtrack is a new hardback book ‘The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse: The Animated Story’, published by Ebury Press.
