Shakespears Sister have today shared the video for their new single All The Queen’s Horses. The track is the first new material from the pair in twenty-six years and the first to be signed to the reformed London Records.
The video was shot in Joshua Tree by Sophie Muller, who has made videos for Beyonce, Rihanna, Bjork and The Strokes and also shot Shakespears Sister’s iconic videos for Stay, You’re History and I Don’t Care. The video features a cameo from Morgan McMichaels from Ru Paul’s Drag Race Season 2 and All-Stars Season 3. Marcy met Morgan for the first time when he was performing as Marcy herself at a drag night in LA and they have since become friends. Nick Launay, who produced this new track and has also worked with Nick Cave and Yeah Yeah Yeahs also appears in the video.
Sophie’s video deftly plays with Shakespears Sister’s past and present in a number of ways: not just exploring the ways in which the song can be seen as a cipher for their relationship, but also revisiting, reinvigorating and at times wryly echoing their visual iconography.
Speaking about the video Shakespears Sister explain:
Siobhan: ‘Shakespears Sister musically is me and Marcy but visually it’s me, Marcy and Sophie. Without her, a big part of the artistry and the story would be missing. It made me cry the first three times I watched it.’
Marcy: ‘I think what Sophie did with it as well was brought a sense of healing, a sense of us making fun of ourselves and being okay with the whole drama that ensued between us. I just think it’s perfect.’
Shakespears Sister will release a Singles Collection, Singles Party on 19 July. The album features another new track C U Next Tuesday, as well as classic hits from the duo’s back catalogue. They embark on the Shakespears Sister Ride Again tour this October and November, playing an extensive run of UK shows, including a night at The London Palladium.
