Irish alt-rock artist and producer Ria Rua releases new single and music video ‘Black And Tan’ – listen here.
With ‘Black And Tan’, Ria Rua delivers a ferocious, unflinching critique of power and corruption, channelling her signature blend of industrial alt-rock and razor-sharp lyricism. A sonic gut-punch of pounding percussion and urgent vocals, the track embodies raw defiance.
Speaking of the single, Ria says: “Black And Tan is about the rise of the modern sociopath. There are unfortunately a long and growing list of examples.
The Black and Tans were a British paramilitary force in Ireland that were known for their lawlessness and hyper-violence towards innocents. Their atrocities created a worldwide scandal, undermining supposed British Imperial moral authority, and made Irish independence inevitable. The sociopaths that rule our world at the moment will not rule it forever. The lesson of The Black and Tans is that the more desperate sociopaths become, the more inevitable their collapse.’
Ria Rua’s rise has been anything but conventional. Growing up in rural Meath, Ireland, she often felt like an outcast but found solace in music. From disrupting her mother’s choir practice as a child to becoming an in-demand drummer, her path has been a journey of self-discovery and defiance. Today, her music serves as a beacon for young neurodivergent and queer Irish women seeking freedom and self-expression.
Her recent singles ‘I Love That For You’, ‘You’ll Only Like Me When I’m Dead’ and ‘I Want You’ have garnered critical acclaim, earning spots on Spotify’s New Music Friday and An Alternative Future, and widespread radio play across Ireland, the UK, Germany, and the US. She has graced stages at Dublin’s Vicar Street, supporting Soda Blonde, and headlined the 2023 Musictown Festival. With her debut album in the works, Ria Rua continues to carve out her place as a revolutionary voice in alt-rock.
