Triumphant and joyous! Red Rum Club, who exploded from Liverpool with sold out tours and a glorious debut album in 2019, return with their first new music of the year in Eleanor, a sugar-tipped arrow fired directly from Cupid’s bow. Released today on Modern Sky, the happy gang of party-starters have played it from the heart, delivering a much-needed shot-in-the-arm right on the cusp of summer. Working once again at their home city’s legendary Parr Street Studios in the company of producer Chris Taylor (Blossoms, The Coral, She Drew The Gun), Eleanor is the first, brand new song from the band this year.
Routinely tearing crowds away from heavyweight festival headliners, Red Rum Club’s moreish hooks and limitless energy catapulted them from beer-sodden local clubs to selling a whopping 3,000 tickets in Liverpool during their maiden 12-month campaign for debut album, Matador. It’s the live atmosphere of complete, energetic surrender to melody that Red Rum Club engineer that has led them to be nominated at the AIM Independent Music Awards 2020 for Best Live Act.
Prolific and ambitious, it was while hurtling from gig to gig that they began writing their more urgent, melodic, and focused follow-up.
From Bucharest to Seoul and Glastonbury to the Isle of Wight, Red Rum Club’s travels have condensed a decade of experience into two, wild years, yet Eleanor hints at the bliss to be found when they finally find their way home.
Lead singer, Fran Doran, says: “It’s a perfect love song, sung to and about Tom’s (guitarist) partner, Eleanor. It was written as an aid to help her overcome an ongoing battle with mental health, she needed a ‘pick me up’ song. It’s a happy, summery ode to finding the right person who you just click with and can’t imagine being without. When we went back in the studio after the success of Matador, we didn’t know what to expect, but this came effortlessly as it was from the heart and, as it’s so close to Tom, none of us wanted to mess with his vision for what it should be.”
Formed of Doran, Tom Williams (lead guitar), Michael McDermott (rhythm guitar), Simon Hepworth (bass), Neil Lawson (drums) and their famed trumped player, Joe Corby, Red Rum Club possess a magical ability to enchant their audiences through expertly-written pop gems and cinematic story-telling. Their melodies are utterly addictive, and Corby’s brass flourishes, inspired by obscure Cuban Pop and Mexican mariachi, bring an inimitable Tarantino-esque glamour to these north country boys.
As well as numerous headline tours of their own, culminating in a sold-out Liverpool O2 Academy, the band has enjoyed high-profile support slots with bands including The 1975.
