Nick Mulvey is pleased to share his new EP ‘Begin Again’ on Fiction Records, as well as a live performance of the title track. Stream the EP here and watch the video below.
In the face of our urgently uncertain future, ‘Begin Again’ serves as a reminder of the rich pastures of wisdom that can be found through reconnecting with our families. It is loosely inspired by Nick’s journey to discover more about his grandmother, Mary, who died before he was born. He sought to learn more about her and was able to establish a deep connection with her through moving accounts of her teachings, rooted deeply in compassion and mutual respect. The track seeks to envelop the listener in its uplifting, sincere message of the importance of interconnection.
On ‘Third Way’, Nick explores the need to rebalance in an age structured around growth, power and doing. Its delicate balance mimics its exploration of the qualities of the yin and yang; of being and doing. “I find it interesting that underneath the initial theme of anti-over-consumption lays this deeper and underlying theme of healing imbalance,” Nick says. “Because after all, why do we over-consume? We are living through an incredible shift. The old ways are dying, right before our very eyes.”
The EP release is accompanied by a new live performance of ‘Begin Again’. Speaking about the video, Nick says: “Creating videos in the lockdown was a challenge but I was fortunate that filmmakers Jack Harries and Alice Aedy were quarantining nearby. When the restrictions lessened we were able to trek to this location – Heaven’s Gate, in the north of Ibiza – just in time for the first rays of sunrise, and film this video of Begin Again.”
‘Begin Again’ is Nick’s first release since his 2019 song ‘In The Anthropocene’, a single that was pressed onto the innovative ‘Ocean Vinyl’, a world-first in record making being made entirely from recycled ocean plastic washed up and reclaimed from UK beaches. The release also generated funds for Surfers Against Sewage to help with their work and is a pertinent example of Nick’s ambition to innovate and use his music to inspire positive change.
Nick’s acclaimed debut album First Mind stood alone as a compelling body of work both intricate and loose, and deservedly nominated for the 2014 Mercury Music Prize. It was followed with a second album, Wake Up Now in 2017, which further cemented Nick’s position as a distinctive, singular British musician whose music stands alone, genre free.
