Get ready for a music-filled weekend! This week’s New Music Friday is packed with exciting new releases.
THE SHERLOCKS – BONES
After three Top 10 albums, The Sherlocks have set an ambitious target for any independent band – to achieve their first ever #1 with their new album ‘Everything Must Make Sense!’ which is released on February 21st. Pre-Order here. There’s plenty to justify that goal: a devoted following that enabled them to sell-out a huge Don Valley Bowl show; strong support for the recent singles ‘Man On The Loose’ and ‘Death of Me’; and the most thumping, anthemic and in-your-face music of their career so far. That final point is underlined as they today share their latest single ‘BONES’.
‘BONES’ is the sound of The Sherlocks going for broke: a larger-than-life explosion of pounding electro-beats, heavyweight grooves, gritty guitar riffs, radiant synths, piano-and-string atmospherics, and the sort of strident, super-infectious hook that comes across like Sheffield’s answer to The Killers. It continues the statement that they’ve made with each song from the upcoming album – whatever your preconceptions of The Sherlocks are, they’re now primed to become something far bigger than anyone had previously expected.
SARAH KLANG – GO TO THE SUN
Sarah Klang shares her new music single ‘Go to the Sun’ from her stellar upcoming fifth album ‘Beautiful Woman’, which is due for release February 7th on Nettwerk. Listen HERE.
The sweet acoustic melodies, soothing slide guitar and laid-back country twang provide a bigger sound to envelope Sarah’s vulnerable vocal without compromising any of the insistent pop qualities that fans have come to love and respect her for. Its cosy warmth is perfectly fitting for a song that’s equally about looking for brighter, happier horizons, but still realising that wherever you go, your inner emotions will be joining you for the ride.
Sarah says, “This song represents going to better places, be it in your mind or physically travelling to those places. It’s about escaping from the day-to-day and finding your way.”
Sarah Klang will follow the release of the ‘Beautiful Woman’ album by heading out on a European headline tour.
LU.CI – CHAINS
Lu.Ci is a rare artist who loves what she does so much that it spreads an infectious charm to those who discover her. That motivating positivity is boosted by her fiercely determined DIY approach to promotion, as her larger-than-life personality makes a big impact on socials.
Lu.Ci’s strident vocal class is her standout talent and that’s particularly irresistible in ‘Chains’ as she unites power, poise and personality with a voice that just can’t be denied. The music, however, is a departure from what we’ve heard from her before: a pulsating electro-pop banger with house and funk influences, while its spoken word breakdown provides a dynamic contrast that really allows its final hook to go stratospheric. LISTEN HERE
Lu.Ci says,“Money makes the world go round, but how are you gonna spend your money if the earth dies? It’s time to put our priorities straight before it’s too late. As a collective, we have forgotten what’s important, and we have put money and power first over life. Choices are being taken away from people, others are struggling to get by and species are dying out. There’s enough money in the world that all of these issues can be irradiated if only we all worked together.”
FISHER & AR/CO – OCEAN
Grammy-nominated FISHER and indie dance duo AR/CO team up on ‘Ocean’, the sun-kissed new single.
Harnessing AR/CO’s feel-good energy, FISHER lays down a tech house groove on ‘Ocean’, laden with sharp synths, while AR/CO provide their distinct blend of infectious melodies and catchy vocals. Arriving just in time for Aussie summer, this is a bright and uplifting anthem that makes you want to bomb down Gold Coast beach and dive headfirst into the sea.
Around the single collaboration, FISHER has stated: “Trying to bring the ocean to the groove. Every time I play this track, the dance floor explodes like a whale’s blowhole! With such a saucy beat and AR/CO’s euphoric vocals, it’s hard not to move. It was such a pleasure writing this track with AR/CO. These legends are definitely ones to watch out for in the future.”
AR/CO have also added: “While we were in Oz chatting with our mates about standout artists on the scene, one name kept coming up: Fish. He’s a national treasure over there and has been making waves around the world too. We’d written a track called Ocean, and with Fish being not only one of the biggest DJs in the world but also a pro surfer, the collaboration felt like it was meant to be. The vibe between us is super laid-back and full of good times on both sides, so it all came together naturally. Every time we hear this track, we fall in love with it all over again. We can’t wait to share it with everyone.”
SAINT SAPPHO – FALL INTO THE LIE
As Saint Sappho, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Zoe Young and drummer Tammy Dyson make expansive music that reaches out to hazy new realms, while simultaneously channeling the emotive pull of shoegaze, grunge and 90s electronica. Their latest track ‘Fall Into The Lie’, out now via Optimo Music Rocks, is a stirring injection of bass synthesizer, industrial drums, spacious vocals, and hazy delay-driven guitars.
Accompanying the single is a stunning music video featuring evocative underwater shots that amplify the track’s themes. As Tammy explains: “The underwater shots were supposed to evoke sensations of drowning, to symbolise the weight of societal pressures, feeling inescapable. The same way those in power make us feel, trapped under water whilst they are breathing comfortably above. We got quite symbolic but still wanted to make the video artistically inform the lyrics.”
‘Fall Into The Lie’ is both dreamy and defiant – ethereal electronics yield to a robust percussive groove and deeply penetrating lyrics. As the state of the world around us appears to grow more fractured by the day, here Saint Sappho muse on the slippery topics of religion, politics and contemporary culture. The song is both a warning and a rallying cry; when it feels as though your voice goes unheard and your individual efforts come to nothing, it’s all too easy to “fall into the lie”.
