Singer, songwriter, and producer McClenney is returning with a brand new single featuring Baby Rose titled “Karma Plays.”
Based in Los Angeles by way of Maryland, McClenney is a mentee of Quincy Jones who boasts a Grammy nomination for his work on Khalid hit “Location,” contributions to H.E.R’s Grammy winning self-titled album, and has written and produced for many of today’s most prominent acts including Wale, Xavier Omar, Kyle Dion, Boogie, Smino, Chika, DRAM, The Chainsmokers, Kygo, Rexx Life Raj and Marco McKinnis.
On “Karma Plays,” McClenney showcases his multi-instrumentalist talents on the slow-burning R&B single that he wrote, produced, and performed. “The past year, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about karma and the consequences of everything I do,” explains McClenney. “[Karma Plays] is about insomnia, but mental insomnia specifically. Where you’re mentaly exhausted and emotionally drained because you can’t turn your brain off. The song is a cautionary tale.” Featuring fellow DMV artist Baby Rose, McClenney considers her vocal contributions transformative for the song “There’s an honesty she brings to all of her songs that I felt made ‘Karma Plays’ so much better.”
Up next for McClenney, he will be completing his highly anticipated solo project as well as overseeing his work with Flatbush Zombies, Mereba, Baby Rose, Anis, Rhye, Bennett, Love Mansuy and many more, over the past year. He is also currently celebrating the release of his contributions to Wale’s newly released ‘Imperfect Storm’ EP. Having worked on four-songs off the project including fan favorite “Shit Don’t Stop,” EP single “Movin’ Different” is also a sample of McClenney’s original song “sidetoside.”
As far as his solo McClenney artist project, in 2020 he has already provided fans a sneak peek of the first three singles off his forthcoming project, “Get Back,” “TRIP,” and “Black Betty White” feat. Erick the Architect from east coast collective Flatbush Zombies. Outside of the studio, McClenney recently celebrated another major achievement. In late 2019, he co-authored two proposals to change the names of Rap and R&B categories for the Grammys that have been approved. The first proposal changed the “Best Rap / Sung Performance” category to “Best Melodic Rap Performance,” and the second proposal changed “Best Urban Contemporary Album” to “Best Progressive R&B Album.”
