London-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Maya Delilah returns with her new single ‘Begin Again’. The poignant new song “is about life in simple terms,” says Maya. Listen Here.
Speaking about her new single, she explains “It’s about things starting and ending: ‘another day, another end, oh we begin again.’ I’ve experienced a lot of ends in my life as many have, whether that’s friendships and relationships coming to an end or losing loved ones, so this song feels like a reminder to myself and to you to take it slow and that things feel a lot bigger than they are in the moment. It felt only right to have a big emotional guitar solo to fill half the song as everything I wanted to lyrically say had been said.”
A 24-year-old from North London, Maya attended the prestigious BRIT School whose alumni include Adele, Amy Winehouse, and FKA twigs, among many others. In 2020, lockdown put a pause on the background session work Maya had begun to do within her community of music-making friends, so she turned to livestreams and TikTok and Instagram. She built up a devoted following for her incredible guitar abilities and authenticity with unadorned clips where she would sit cross-legged on the floor, a bed, or a table, her fingernails dancing over the strings, making the guitar sing out whole moods.
Over the course of two self-released EPs (2020’s Oh Boy, 2021’s It’s Not Me, It’s You), Maya amassed more than 50 million streams of fan favourites including ‘Breakup Season’, ‘Tangerine Dream’, and ‘Moonflower’ that greeted heartache with humour. Maya began releasing music on Blue Note/Capitol in 2022, with a memorable appearance on the 2022’s collection Blue Note Re:imagined II where she put her own distinct twist on Cassandra Wilson’s cover of Neil Young’s ‘Harvest Moon’.
In 2023, Maya released a trilogy of singles, which included the bittersweet ‘Silver Lining’, the ode to connectedness ‘Necklace’, and the nostalgic 70s-inspired ‘Actress’. Praised by The Line of Best Fit and Evening Standard, Maya also received multiple spins by Mollie King on BBC Radio 1’s Future Pop and Radio 1’s Future Artists (Jack Saunders, Tara Kumar, Sian Eleri) and was chosen as ‘Next Wave’ by Sian Eleri, alongside being hailed by Gilles Peterson and Craig Charles on 6Music. Earlier this year, she supported indie pop supergroup FIZZ (Orla Gartland, dodie, Greta Isaac and Martin Luke Brown) and graced the stage of the Brasserie Zédel for Women In Jazz, an organisation that champions and nurtures female artists and DJs across the UK. This summer, Maya was on the bill of multiple UK festivals, including Boardmasters and Cross The Tracks.
Listed on the Fender ‘Next Class of 2024’ this April, a huge co-sign from the guitar brand she’s been playing since age eight, and with more music to come in the following months, Maya Delilah is definitely one to watch for 2025.
