What a year it’s been for Keane! After a year full of spectacular 20th anniversary celebrations, the band announce the final instalment with the release of a forthcoming hardback book Hopes and Fears: Lyrics and History – to be published November 28th by Faber Music & Island Records.
With the original handwritten sketches and album lyrics to massive hits such as ‘Somewhere Only We Know’, ‘Everybody’s Changing’, ‘Bend and Break’, ‘Bedshaped’ & ‘This Is The Last Time’, the book includes beautifully crafted reflections from members Tom Chaplin, Tim Rice-Oxley & Richard Hughes, who originally met as school friends.
Jesse Quin, who joined the band as bassist in 2011 offers his unique insight into the first time he heard the band, and the book also includes scans of the band’s original personal notebooks & candid in-the-studio photographs – altogether giving an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look and insight into the creative process and inspiration behind an iconic, stand-out album of the 2000s.
To round off this year’s celebrations and launch of the book, Keane will open their own special pop up shop on the legendary Tin Pan Alley, Denmark Street, in collaboration with Outernet.
Taking place Thursday, Nov 28th – Sunday Dec 1st, the pop up will stock the book, music, and a selection of new merchandise, as well as favourite items from this year’s Keane20 tour and festivities. There will also be a selection of Keane20 prints taken by official touring photographer Jon Stone on show and available to purchase in limited quantities.
On the Friday Nov 29th, the band will perform a historic, intimate acoustic performance, with book signing, next door at The Forge – formerly The 12 Bar Club where Keane played as they were first starting out back in 2002. Spaces are limited and available via a ballot HERE.
No one could have quite predicted what an incredible year 2024 could have been for Keane. From the moment the 20th anniversary plans were unveiled, it’s been a whirlwind year of activity that’s seen a special remastered version of Hopes and Fears, a world tour that saw a memorable Glastonbury Pyramid Stage performance and huge sold out shows from two nights at London’s O2 Arena, to Mexico City, North America, to India & South Africa – playing these two countries for the very first time and proving the ever-growing demand for the band worldwide. They were also joined onstage in Mumbai with Anoushka Shankar to play a special version of ‘Everybody’s Changing’. Their last tour of the year in Latin America starts 5th November in Brazil and sees them take in Uruguay. Argentina, Peru, Chile, Colombia and Paraguay.
Hopes and Fears was a landmark album for Keane and has set all kinds of records in the process. It’s one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history having sold over 2.5 million in the UK in its first year, and a million in the USA propelled by their absolutely classic song ‘Somewhere Only We Know’. ‘Hopes and Fears’ is 9x platinum in the UK, a remarkable achievement. The album has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
