With the release of his expansive and thoughtful third album Beginner’s Mind, John Budnik Band continues to showcase the genre fluidity and creative charm that has become his signature. The album dives into a variety of styles including rock, blues, soul, and more, crafting a sound that is both distinctive and authentic. This is particularly evident in the lead single and title track, ‘Beginner’s Mind’. Listen here
The album was recorded in Budnik’s garage in Palmer, Alaska, drawing inspiration from Philip Toshio Sudo’s book “Zen Guitar”. The creation process emphasizes an open-minded approach, moving away from traditional notions of “right” and “wrong” in music, allowing Budnik to approach his craft with the curiosity and freedom of a beginner, despite his years of experience.
John Budnik is not new to the music scene; he serves as the lead guitarist for the local Alaskan band Triple Black Diamonds and has independently written and recorded all material for his solo project. His performances have included shows to crowds of over 10,000 at Salmonfest in 2017 and 2019, where he shared the stage with notable artists like Jason Mraz, Jewel, Railroad Earth, Ani DiFranco, and The California Honeydrops. Additionally, Budnik has contributed to the I-5 Corridor podcast by providing the intro and bumper music.
The new single ‘Beginner’s Mind’ encapsulates the album’s philosophy, reflecting themes of acceptance and enlightenment. The track, like the album, avoids conventional musical constraints, focusing instead on a natural exploration of sound that feels both liberating and beautiful, unmarred by commercial pressures or formulaic structures.
‘Beginner’s Mind’ was released on Friday, January 17, 2025, and offered listeners a fresh auditory experience that blends deep philosophical undertones with musical innovation. This album not only showcases Budnik’s musical versatility but also his commitment to exploring new dimensions of creativity and mindfulness in music.
