Joe Wong releases his debut album Nite Creatures, which is a collection of ten baroque, ruminative and gently psychedelic songs via Decca Records on 5th February 2021. The UK release will be available on limited edition, deluxe vinyl album and on all digital service providers.
Joe Wong is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, and podcaster host of ‘The Trap Set’. Based in Los Angeles, California he has already made his mark on the psych scene.
As a musician and composer for the past two decades, Joe Wong has received praise from The Guardian, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Drowned In Sound, and NY Times. Nite Creatures is his first solo outing, showcasing his vocals as a developing artist.
For Nite Creatures, Joe gathered some of his eminent friends to create a ’60s psych-pop’ feel with his own twist. Guest appearances including, Jon Natchez (War on Drugs), Craig Wedren (Shudder to Think), Anna Waronker (that dog.), Steven Drozd (Flaming Lips) and a 16-member string section, featuring members of the LA Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Joe comments, ‘Nite Creatures charts my journey through loss and redemption. Creating the album helped me emerge from a dark hole; I hope it brings people some modicum of joy during these difficult times.”
This award winning composer of 20 years has produced film scores for Emmy-winning series Russian Doll, Master Of None on Netflix, the Sundance-winning narrative The Pool and critically acclaimed animated series, The Midnight Gospel. He is currently working on a new project with the team behind last year’s Sundance Award Winning Boys’ State. Plus, a new series, co-created by Oscar winner Morgan Neville and Emmy Winner Jenji Kohan and the return of the applauded series ‘Russian Doll’.
Joe has been creating music and performing music from classical to punk since the age of 6. He began playing professionally in clubs at the tender age of 14 and found himself touring on the US DIY circuit by 17, even booking his own gigs and traveling thousands of miles during school holidays. Subsequently, Joe has played with jazz luminaries, Senagalese and Salsa groups, and toured with NY-noise punks Parts & Labor, shredder Marnie Stern, and Mary Timony. As a concert percussionist, he has performed with Norah Jones, Mica Levi, Joanna Newsome, and Jon Brion.
He is a noted drummer and hosts a popular weekly podcast and radio show, ‘The Trap Set’ that delves into the lives of musicians. The show draws on Joes background as a touring drummer and features over 300 artists spanning genre, generation, and background. Guests include, Sharon Van Etten, Phil Collins, The Damned, The Zombies, The Slits, Flea, Billy Gibbons, Sly & Robbie, Milford Graves, Aldous Harding, Sheila E., et. al. Wong is currently producing a new series about the British post-punk scene, hosted by Lol Tolhurst (The Cure) and Budgie (The Banshees).
Already issued Stateside to enthusiastic reviews, Nite Creatures title track song was described by Vice as, “a golden stroll through a lush, orchestral landscape of vocal harmonies, horns, and twinkles, showing off the melodic sensibilities that prove he’s long been ready to go it alone.”
