Hazel English releases ‘Combat’, the latest track from her forthcoming debut album Wake UP! released April 24th via Marathon Artists. Stream the track here or watch the lyric video here.
‘Combat’ follows the spirited, direct ‘Shaking’ and mesmeric, ’60s pop-infused ‘Off My Mind’ with a more tranquil energy, driven by an instantly timeless melody and serene vocals. The track marks a shift of pace on Wake UP! and perfectly demonstrates Hazel’s ability to glide seamlessly between sonic styles. Largely conceived whilst Hazel listened to The Mamas & The Papas, Jefferson Airplane and Revolver-era Beatles, Wake UP! as a whole is a punchy record that arrows straight for the jugular, with ‘Combat’ serving as a delicate centrepiece and undeniable highlight.
Speaking about the track, Hazel says: “‘Combat’ is about the push and pull of two people dealing with conflict in a relationship. It’s about how sometimes winning an argument can actually mean losing the real battle – maintaining intimacy with a partner.”
Wake UP! was produced by Justin Raisen (Angel Olsen, Charli XCX) in LA and Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Glass Animals, The Big Moon) in Atlanta. It’s a record that Hazel serves as a timely klaxon to give us all a meaningful shake and become more present in our own lives. “Sometimes I feel like we’re just sleepwalking through our lives,” Hazel explains, hoping that Wake UP! helps “make people become more aware and mindful.” Confronting issues with capitalism, Wake UP! also explores power struggles, looking at how shifting dynamics affect relationships, be it in the music industry or in romantic life. It’s a multi-faceted, multi-layered record, kissed by Hazel’s own unique poetic verse.
