After the successful release of GRACE GAUSTAD’s debut album/miniseries “BLKBX: wht r u hiding?”, the talented L.A.-based singer/songwriter is back with the electrifying “PILLBX: whts ur fantasy?” their second album and a continuation of the innovative concept envisioned by GRACE with BLKBX.
BLKBX aimed to unlock the “black box” of GRACE’s journey as a teenager and the emotional battles with depression, anxiety, sexuality, peer pressure, and bullying. PILLBX represents a new season in GRACE’s life, who now, as a young adult, fantasizes about being famous like in their track “Gaga,” popular like in“Everybody’s Friend,” beautiful like in “Beauty and the Beast” or even having the power to take revenge like in“Nothing to me.”
Artistically, GRACE is at the forefront of their generation with a pioneering concept that is deliberately unique. Their songs are a stunning mosaic; each album connects to the next. The album contains 13 songs presented as episodes of a multimedia music series.
Each song of PILLBX is, by itself, a work of art. The impeccable production by Grace, in collaboration with Scott Effman and Andy Seltzer, and the cinematic visual narratives by Van Alpert draw the audience into a fantastic world in which Grace, falling under the spell of the Bodega Man, explores alternate realities that question deep emotional issues.
GRACE has become a vital and visible voice for those young generations who are now experiencing that transition into adulthood. By asking, “If you could take a pill and make it go away, what would you change?” GRACE questions issues such as self-acceptance, beauty, gender, sexuality, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
Mental health awareness and LGBTQ advocacy are at the core of Gaustad’s work. This young artist is aware of the power of their talent to serve as a bridge and voice for other young people of their generation who have had to fight similar battles.
This full multimedia concept album features the actress Mariska Hargitay delivering a powerful message in the song “Disappear.” And in the episode “Like a Person,” we get a guest appearance from the trans activist and influencer Dylan Mulvaney.
The album closes with the song “Colors and Shapes,” which is the perfect ending. GRACE shares how love strengthens you in the darkest moments of your life. The video contrasts with GRACE’s dramatic moments. It is simple, direct, and beautiful. Listen to the track here
“Colors & Shapes” is a song about loving someone unconditionally. Your love for this person never changes, just as colors & shapes never change. I love the metaphor and feel that it is perfect for capturing what true love feels like. I wrote this record for my beloved Katie and proposed to her during the music video. It was pure magic.” Grace
