Galen & Paul’s debut album ‘Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day?’ proved to be one of the year’s most unexpected discoveries. Drawing upon an international array of influences, the duo’s bilingual vocals painted evocative vignettes of scenes across Europe. And in partnership with Galen Ayers, Paul Simonon again proved that he’s still always eager to make music that absolutely no-one expected from him.
Now Galen & Paul put the album back in the spotlight as they share the new video for its closing track ‘A Sea Shanty’. The video sees the pair taking to the high seas. Watch it below.
As the song unfolds, Galen & Paul reference some of England’s less renowned explorers: tourists necking shots and staggering around like they’re in the mud of Flanders, gangsters who have fled to the Spanish coast. But as a classic ska-tinged Simonon bassline and a Spanish-language flourish from Galen takes the track towards its conclusion, a famous face provides a final twist that’s even more classically English than anything they’re singing about.
The video was directed by Daniel Kleinman, best known for designing the title sequences for numerous ‘James Bond’ films, and was conceptualised by Paul Simonon. It also features filming and lighting from ‘Gladiator’ cinematographer John Mathieson.
The ‘Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day?’ project sparked a wave of fascination, leading to airplay at BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio London and a TV debut on ‘Sunday Brunch’, while news coverage included Rolling Stone UK and US, NME, Spin MOJO, Louder Sound, American Songwriter and Louder Than War. Galen & Paul have played select shows too, headlining sold-out gigs in London and Paris as well as playing Mexico’s Hay Festival Queretaro – all with their own take onThe Clash’s ‘Guns of Brixton’ included in the set.
Physical formats of the album are available from their official store, along with their recent series of 7” singles and tour t-shirts for their recent shows.
