Australian alt-pop artist færy returns with ‘beltane’, the fourth single from her debut album rising, set to be released on 31st October. Listen here.
Beltane, derived from the Gaelic word meaning ‘bright fire’, marks the midpoint between spring and summer equinoxes on the Wiccan calendar. It is a celebration of love, sexuality and renewal. The festival of the sacred marriage, the meeting of masculine and feminine, vitality and abundance. In the case of færy’s latest single, ‘beltane’ explores the bittersweet journey of heartbreak and healing by blending environmental soundbites with ethereal, whispery vocals in a sultry composition of poetic lyricism and soul-stirring instrumentation.
“I was meant to be there on my honeymoon, but because my partner and I had split right after my Dad died, I took a bunch of women instead. It was wild and fun and just the medicine I needed but it was also sad and destructive and rattling to my soul.”
“I was taking endless baths and regularly in the pool trying to wash off my pain and I made a series of recordings whilst staying there, of the sounds of my bath interwoven with birdsong,” said Cornell.
With all songs on the album written across one year, ‘beltane’ shows the evolution of Cornell’s recording process.
“I explored more of my range in ‘beltane’. I think my experience making films and theatre means I am always thinking of the full soundscape and the theatricality of it. I want a whole world created that the listener can step into and lose themselves in, as if one had stepped off the path into a fairy ring and is suddenly in an entirely different realm of colour and light.”
Hailing from Byron Bay, færy (Liana Cornell) is an established actor, writer, filmmaker, and environmentalist, known for her roles in series such as Britannia, Wolf Creek, House of Hancock, Love Child, Schapelle and more. In 2021, she released the Refugia project and an accompanying documentary series, focusing on good environmental works undertaken by unsung, everyday heroes and celebrating communities and companies dedicated to nurturing nature. færy, her foray into music, is her new creative evolution. færy makes music that feels like it’s being pulled from deep within you – part untamed spirit, part mythological rebel. Her debut album rising is set to be released on 31st October – pre-order here.
