19-year-old one-to-watch artist and songwriter Tom King has today released his debut EP ‘Confessions of a Lonely Heart’. Tom also shares highlight track ‘Excuses’ as well as details for his debut UK headline show at Laylow on February 3rd.
The long-awaited EP details the various stages of grief in a broken relationship – a collection of instantly relatable hymns stemming from a very personal heartbreak. The tender ‘Hollow’ signifying the immediate aftermath. The sense of betrayal palpable through the lyrics “I’ve never felt so hollow and heavy at the same time”. Meanwhile, the atmospheric ballad ‘Freedom’ is the result of burning bridges in a state of acceptance, whilst ‘Honest’ beams with a new-found sense of confidence, maturity and power.
On the EP’s focus track ‘Excuses’, Tom says: “As much as it’s about heartbreak, I feel like ‘Excuses’ is an empowering song. It’s about not letting someone take advantage of you, however much you love them and want to be with them. Sometimes it’s best to get out of there as quickly as possible”
Mirroring the likes of his idols, Adele and Sam Smith, the EP demonstrates Tom’s incredible ability to transform stark sadness into something bold and powerful. Emotional clarity seeps through every corner of the EP, and with the help of Tom’s soul-drenched vocals, his heartache is amplified with beautiful precision, offering a perspective that goes way beyond his 19 years.
Tom has already attracted the attention of some of the country’s leading writers and producers including Nick Hahn (Georgia Twinn), Ollie Green (Freya Ridings, Tom Grennan) and George Moore (YEBBA, Clean Bandit), whose collaborations with Tom appear on the EP.
Tom says about the EP:
“This EP is based on my boy problems I had back in school. I experienced some quite intense unrequited love that never really got resolved. I felt like writing this EP helped release everything. I called it ‘Confessions of a Lonely Heart’ because that’s what it felt like. I hadn’t properly addressed my feelings. In these writing sessions I was confessing things I’d never talked about with anyone. I hope people can relate to these songs and hopefully this EP can help anyone going through a difficult relationship or unrequited love, like I was.”
Showing no signs of slowing down, Tom is set to play his debut UK headline show at Laylow on February 3rd, 2022.
