International superstar and long-reigning queen of k-pop, CL, released her new single “SPICY,” with the accompanying music video.
“SPICY” marks the beginning of CL’s “ALPHA” project, which will be unveiled in October following the release of its second single in September. The high-energy track ushers in a powerful new era for CL, reinforcing the permanence of her proverbial throne. With collaboration from world-renowned producer Baauer (who helped bring CL’s official intro “+POST UP+” into the world in 2020) and Sokodomo (of “High School Rapper 3” fame), a unique color was brought to “SPICY” –symbolizing the attitude and values CL has exhibited for the past 13 years.
“I’m very excited to start my project, ALPHA, with ‘SPICY’,” said CL. “’SPICY’ is classically CL, following ‘The Baddest Female,’ ‘Hello Bitches,’ even ‘Menboong/ MTBD.’ It’s a song that celebrates just being yourself. For me, being Korean, being Asian… I’m celebrating all that, and that attitude. Just being myself.” Adding, “ And I’m so honored to have John Malkovich on the song talking about energy, power and chemistry!”
As evidenced by the title, “SPICY” expresses CL’s fierce charisma and spotlights CL’s signature alpha essence, arriving with the intense energy and style (and mix of rap, pop and k-pop) that has defined her tenure as a global pop artist. CL—who began as a leader of girl group 2NE1 and evolved into the epitome of a strong and independent artist, gives a lyrical nod to her strong Korean roots by likening her evolution to a “SPICY” sauce. The single opens with a low-pitched narration by the esteemed actor, John Malkovich—a memorable intro to the smash record primed to etch itself into her music history of greatest hits (see classics: “the Baddest Female” and “Hello Bitches”).
