Manchester Gospel/Soul duo – CANTER SEMPER – are preparing for an unmissable hometown headline appearance at Academy 3 on Friday 31st January.
Centred around the velvety harmonies of duel vocalists Sarah Adams and Emma Brewin, since their formation in 2013 Canter Semper have evolved and nurtured a compelling brand of “Vintage Gospel” completely their own.
Weaving harmony driven melodies and earnest whole-hearted lyricism into otherworldly jazz-tinged soundscapes, their sound drifts in the same blissful stratospheres of contemporaries like The Staves or Smoke Fairies, yet is underpinned with comforting touch familiar to those classic soul records.
Very much at home on the live stage, memorable appearances at the city’s finest haunts from The Deaf Institute and Band On The Wall have seen them enchant growing audiences year on year with their Academy 3 show the next stepping stone in their upward trajectory. Their remarkable live prowess even caught the attention of the highly-acclaimed Duke Special, who recently offered them special invitation out-of-the-blue to perform with him on stage at his recent RNCM appearance.
Natural collaborators (with Sarah notably also the leader of the Manchester Survivors Choir), Canter Semper regularly work with a revolving collective of artistic, and prominently female, talent from the thriving local scene to create individual and enveloping shows. Their upcoming performance at Academy 3 promises to be no different. With a broad “orchestral meets roots theme” this time, Canter Semper will be showcasing a striking new collaboration with the Northern Session Collective’s string quartet who will offer their unique touch to a number of the band’s oeuvre. In addition, a guest appearance from Steph Lonsdale will see the budding Manchester poet lace-in her singular spoken word during the performance.
With the ability to create a goosebump-raising aura upon the stage, Canter Semper’s latest outing promises to be a must-see evening of creation and collaboration, a nourishing night for the soul to warm you through these long winter evenings.
