“Love can be codependent, twisted, toxic and foul. Sometimes I wonder why anybody in their right mind wants to be with me. In my life, I’ve just wanted people to love me so that I can push them away. Repeat the cycle that was repeated on me, forever, never breaking that chain, going around in an endless loop. Finding that grain of light and wanting to capitalise on it but not feeling worthy of peace. Lamenting what could have been and maybe even should have been but never came to be. Because I was too scared. Because I was too weak” – Boy Destroy on ‘Weak’
Pink clouding, or Pink Cloud Syndrome, is a phenomenon many recovering addicts experience when they first go into recovery. When pink clouding, they feel a sense of euphoria that’s then followed by a crash once reality sets in. Following on from 2020’s Warpaint EP, which documented his struggles with addiction, Pink Cloud EP sees Boy Destroy tackle the aftermath, detailing the tumultuous last year of his life which has seen him sign to Warner Music Sweden and play his first ever live shows; finding his footing, albeit apprehensively, into a limitless future.
“Sometimes it feels like I’m in the middle of an entanglement between the demon and my inner child,” he says. “I’m the loner who does their bidding. Free will is a fata morgana. I try to make the most of this life I call mine nowadays. Pink Cloud refers to me trying to find myself in this new reality I’ve been cast upon, trying anything and everything. Lyrically, the introspection remains intact, but my gaze is also directed towards external events and more dreamlike, nightmarish, states.”
Still imbued with macabre lyricism, unbridled honesty, and hooks plenty, Pink Cloud EP is Boy Destroy growing into a new form, distilling the realities of love, burnout and obsession into a thrilling and crossgenre 7 track EP.
Featuring the softest most stripped back we’ve ever seen him on ‘Selfish Lies (Laudunum)’, to saccharine pop punk on ‘NO SLEEP’, alternative rock anthems like ‘Self Immolation’, tongue-in-cheek emo pop on ‘Left Handed’ and even tinges of UK garage in ‘Babyface’, the Pink Cloud EP exhibits an artist who is as inspired by todays trap and hiphop stars, as he is emo icons My Chemical Romance, The Smashing Pumpkins and legacy acts like Jeff Buckley. Exuding his chameleonic artistry into every corner of this new release, Pink Cloud EP is cementing Boy Destroy as a truly enigmatic artist that contains multitudes.
