With a luxuriant vocal gift and the personality to match, Begonia now steps towards the February 24th release of her new album ‘Powder Blue’ by sharing her new single ‘Married By Elvis’. Listen HERE.
With ‘Married By Elvis’, Begonia imagines being a bride on her wedding day, clad in “fringe coat, blue heels” and anticipating a ceremony hosted by Elvis – or at least, the closest thing to Elvis that money can buy. She has her doubts, but the love the couple share is enough for her to go for it regardless of what consequences may follow. The music also follows the moods of a wedding day: the sparse looped beat and stripped-back guitar establishing a nervy atmosphere, before sweeping violin and ethereal vocal harmonies evoke the elegance of the ceremony.
The accompanying video is equally as off-kilter and joyous. Begonia is shown enjoying a big night accompanied by an entire squad of Elvis tribute acts: sinking cocktails, hitting casinos and cruising down the strip. It carries a little ‘70s nostalgia, too, with the faded colour and grainy picture of the filter feeling like it was shot on Super 8. Watch HERE.
Begonia says, “This song started two years ago with a little guitar sample the guys from Deadmen played to me during a writing session. As soon as I heard it this tender, strange song just spilled out of me. All in all, I think we wrote it in a couple hours. At first, it just amused me but then after the session I couldn’t get it out of my head and I started becoming obsessed with picturing the music video I wanted to make for it.
I’ve always been fascinated by tribute artists, and I wanted to just be in an Elvis tribute artist club for a day. I held onto the idea for two years and then finally decided to make it happen with beautiful freak director Ryan Steel. We hired some of the top tribute artists in Western Canada and Ryan totally captured the earnestly absurd joy I was after. I don’t really believe in marriage but I do believe love can make you do some strange things and that’s what this song is all about.”
