With the internet awash with rumours that the ever-controversial Sam Smith was going to be joined on stage by the equally headline-grabbing Madonna, this was initially supposed to be a glorious way to round off a sold-out “Gloria” UK and European tour.
However, after only 4 songs, the singer was forced to cancel the rest of the show after suffering from vocal issues.
With a mix of confusion and disappointment hitting fans, thousands streamed out of the AO Arena. Sam Smith has since issued a public apology after having to cancel the show after only 4 songs in.
Taking to instagram to make the announcement, Sam Smith wrote: “Dearest sailors, I don’t know what to say honestly. I fought off a virus a few weeks ago and since then we have travelled across Europe and had such incredible shows.
“Today in soundcheck I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show tonight, with a special surprise at the end.
“During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong.
“I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won’t. I am honestly heartbroken I couldn’t finish the show tonight for you all. I love you all. I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry x”
Tonight’s show in Glasgow and the show in Birmingham on the 27th, has also been cancelled. Refunds will be issued for Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham at the point of purchase.
