I can imagine a good chunk of people stopped reading once they saw the words Star Trek in the title of this article. To be honest, I probably would have as well being a firm supporter of the other team in the Star-related Sci-Fi arena. However, for author Tom Salinksy, Star Trek became an obsession of his which is how this book ended up coming into existence.
Essentially setting out on a mission to watch every episode of Star Trek – The Original Series, The Animated Series and The Next Generation, this book is an episode by episode look at that journey. Watching an episode a day, Salinsky documented that journey on his blog in real time before collating and reworking all of those posts into this book.
At just over two-hundred pages, his thoughts on each episode have been captured in enough detail to be useful and entertaining while the inclusion of his original tweet on each episode is a handy touch especially if you find the thought of reading through his reviews on each episode almost as arduous as watching the show itself.
That being said, even if you’re not the world’s biggest Star Trek fan, or ‘Trekkie’, the way this book is written will certainly keep you entertained. There is a certain darkness to the author’s humour but, some might say unsurprisingly so given the almost sadistic task he has undertaken.
Elsewhere Tom gives an insight into his journey into sci-fi and how he became aware of Star Trek as well as filling a few chapters with interesting stories and facts about the history of the programme itself. Obviously if you’re a hardcore Trekkie these facts will probably be common knowledge to you but for those with even just a passing interest in what became one of the biggest cult phenomenans the entertainment world has seen, there are some interesting nuggets of Trekkie trivia bandied about.
At the end of the day, whether or not this book will interest you boils down to whether or not you’re a fan of the programme or the genre. That being said, at just over 200 pages, the book itself isn’t a challenging read. It is however an entertaining insight into a journey taken which many deem as that of a madman and definitely won’t take as long to read as it did for the author to create.
