Originally from South Africa, Nic Billington is a luminary in the world of dark pop, and has captivated audiences globally. From gaining international acclaim through YouTube covers to achieving fame in South Africa, Nic’s journey is marked by chart-topping hits and recognition from pop icon Britney Spears. His sophomore album Dark Horse was released last month. A maestro of musical allure, his music is all about defying the usual boundaries of pop music. Nic took the time to have a chat with us about his music and inspirations, see what he had to say here.

1. Thanks for talking to us today, let’s start with your relocation to London. What prompted that move and what’s been your favourite thing about relocating to London?

Thank you for the opportunity! I moved to London because I wanted to expand the reach of my music and bring it to new markets. And to shake things up a bit – a change of scenery is always good for that! Besides the longer summer days, I love how liberal and open-minded people are in London. Being here has boosted my creativity and outlook on life.

2. You started out your career posting videos on YouTube in South Africa. What was your ambition as a budding pop artist?

I’ve always dreamed of a career in music, but I wasn’t quite sure how to make it a reality. I just felt this surge of creativity and a deep desire to share my music with the world. I didn’t have any specific expectations; I was simply eager to put myself out there and see what would happen.

3. It worked out okay though even getting recognition from Britney Spears. Do you want to expand on that story for us?

I had recently begun posting cover songs on YouTube and decided to check the feedback. To my amazement, my cover of Britney Spears’ “Gimme More” had hit 100,000 views within hours. Even more surprising, it was featured on her official website. I was shocked but filled with joy and gratitude. The whole experience truly kick-started my journey as a musician.

4. Let’s talk about the new single “Slasher” an ode to 80s and 90s cult horror movies. Where did your love of the “dark side” start out?

As a kid, I was really into horror movies and music videos like Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” so I’ve always been drawn to darker themes. Over the past decade, I’ve gone through a lot—both highs and lows—so this new album really captures where I’m at today. The darker parts delve into topics we often shy away from, like struggling with self-esteem, coping with loss, or questioning our purpose.

5. Over here in the UK many of us in the 80s grew up watching dodgy videos of The Evil Dead. Did you do anything similar back in South Africa growing up?

I was that quirky kid in school who would stick pencils to a glove and pretend to be Freddy Krueger, chasing everyone around. I’ve always had a fascination with horror movies and shows. As a child, my favorites were Child’s Play, It, Ghostbusters, and Beetlejuice.

6. What about musically, could you talk about some of your influences and inspirations?

I draw a ton of inspiration from 80s musicians such as Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Billy Idol, Madonna, and Prince. This is because when I was a kid, my mom always had their music playing loudly in the house. I’m also heavily influenced by contemporary artists like Billie Eilish, Labrinth, and The Weeknd.

7. The track comes from your album Dark Horse, can you tell our readers a bit more about the album and some of your favourite tracks from it?

“Dark Horse” is a 10-track musical journey that explores dark and seductive themes, inspired by a decade of life’s ups and downs. I had a clear vision for the sound of my new album. I wanted it to resemble the soundtrack of popular TV shows like Stranger Things, True Blood, Riverdale, and 13 Reasons Why. Paul Gala, who produced most of the album, had previously worked on music for Riverdale, so this was all very intentional. The vibe of the album is darker, moodier, and somewhat melancholic, yet it also carries a positive, uplifting energy with some cool 80s nostalgia. Standout tracks include “Homesick,” “Living to Die,” “Dopamine,” and “Goodbye,” although the entire album is solid.

8. Just for fun now, if you could take on one of the biggest horror icons of the 80s Freddy Krueger in a fight, what tactics would you use to beat him?

Since I’m really into fitness, I’d likely just sprint away from him and keep running until he gets tired. Then, I’ll make my move.

9. The album is out, what are your plans for the rest of 2024?

Get ready for plenty more live shows, some cool new music videos, official merchandise, and a ton of creativity!

10. Thanks for your time and good luck for the rest of the year, any last messages to wrap up?

Thank you so much – You too! My final message to all of you is this: Live with purpose. Begin each day by setting a clear intention, and strive to stay focused, avoiding distractions. Remember, wherever your thoughts lead, your energy will follow.
