Inspired by a decade of top pop stars like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Carly Rae Jepsen along with musical theatre, rising UK pop newcomer Lo Lauren is on a mission to bring big epic pop back into the limelight again. Having been blown away by Katy Perry’s live spectacular, Lo Lauren has set her sights high with some lofty goals for the next eighteen months.
Things aren’t starting off too badly either. Influential music names jumped all over her recent single “Wonder” while her new single has been picked up by HBO for their upcoming romcom “Sweethearts”. Following the release of the single, we spoke to Lo about her influences, big pop songs and her own firework.
1. I read that you were inspired by pop icons from the 2010’s. Who were the biggest inspirations?
“Basically anything Max Martin touched I have always been obsessed with. I loved “Teenage Dream”. I loved Katy Perry, Keisha, Carly Rae Jepsen. That kind of vibe. That kind of era. They were smash hits and they were so good to singalong. I feel like not a lot of music is written with that aim to be a big pop song. It’s kind of coming back but it’s not been around for ages and that’s the kind of music I wanted to make.”
2. What was it about those artists that really struck a chord with you?
“It’s bold. It’s a bit theatrical. It’s really entertaining and it’s more than music. It’s the performance. It’s the show. It’s the whole package I see as pop to be.”
3. Was there one particular pop star that made you want to do this as a career and who did you mimic in front of the mirror?
“I went to the Teenage Dreams, California Girls Katy Perry show and I remember watching her and me and my sister were blown away. It truly was a spectacle of a show. Almost like musical theatre in a way. Also, Lady Gaga. I still love Gaga. I think she is phenomenal.”
4. You’ve mentioned musical theatre. Is that something you had an interest in?
“I love musical theatre because it was singing, dancing and acting and I love all three. I didn’t ever want to be in musicals because I wanted to be doing all three. Pop music is a way of combining all of those things I like. I do watch musicals and have friends in musicals so I still go and watch them but I never actually wanted to be on the stage in theatre.”
5. When you’re writing do you look at what the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and those kind of artists are doing and try to incorporate aspects into your own music?
“Not really anymore. Subconsciously, I think their vibes are instilled in me. When I’m making music now, I write what I feel. It’s based on what is going on in the room. We don’t really use reference tracks or stuff like that. It’s just what sounds nice and what makes us feel something, that’s what we go with.”
6. The new single “Before The Kiss” has been picked up for a movie called “Sweethearts”…
“It was HBO, the director of a new movie called ‘Sweethearts’ found the song and reached out and asked if they could use it in a movie trailer. That was a bit of a whirlwind because it was done and dusted and in the trailer within a week. It was really surreal and so cool to see actors acting along to our song.”
7. What was your ambition when you started out? Did you see yourself producing songs for movies and things like that?
“100%. I wanted to do absolutely everything that could be done with music and also give every single song opportunities like this. That’s always been in my head that this is something that would be really cool.”
8. You’ve talked about huge pop superstars like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. Are you reaching for that level of superstardom and everything that goes with it?
“What I actually would like is to tour the world and play my songs. If that is what comes with it then yes, but I’m not desperate for that level of fame. I appreciate that is what might come with it. I don’t know if anyone is prepared for that but I have good people around me so I hope I would be ready if something astronomical like that was too happen.”
9. You described your “Wonder” single like a sweet. As we’re doing this on Bonfire Night, if you could create a Lo Lauren firework, what would that be like?
“It would be multicoloured – pink, purple, yellow, orange and blue and as it exploded on the ground it was fire glitter everywhere. That would be a sick firework.”
10. Just to wrap up then, what’s next and where do you hope your music takes you?
“Well, I feel like a lot of my traction has been in America so as soon as I can get there I would love to go maybe on a support tour. Asia is also somewhere I’ve had traction so I would love to get there as well. Hopefully next year will involve new music, a lot of shows and some festivals.”
