What do Beekeepers, Mermaids, Zombie Margaret Thatcher and Hobbits have in common? They’ve all been the subject of a Totally Improvised Musical! Don’t miss the opening and closing night of a brand-new comedy musical when it comes to the Leicester Comedy Festival this February.
With live musical accompaniment the team compose comedy musicals based on a title given by the audience. Scenes, songs and stories made up on the spot and there may even be some “dancing”. Crafting the characters, composing the music and hitting all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order, this team of award-winning comedians have been delighting audiences at festivals across the UK. “The cast have no clue about the characters, choruses, choreography or even what key we’re meant to be in until we get the title of the musical from you,” explains performer Sean Mason.
“Some nights you end up singing a really touching love song and sometimes you end up doing a dance about ham,” adds Bron Edge who also performs in the show and started The Totally Improvised Company in 2001. “There’s something magic about a show that only exists for one night!”
Previous show titles have included Vampires From Hull, Lawnmowers! The Musical, The First Primark in Space, My Grandma Is a Parasite, The Book of More Men and Four Weddings and A Fist Fight. “The person whose title is picked gets a free pin badge. If that’s not enough to tempt you in, I don’t know what is,” adds Bron. “It’s a really nice pin badge.”
The group picked up a nomination for Best Variety Show at Leicester Comedy Festival 2024 and can’t wait to be back at Europe’s biggest comedy festival in February. If you like musicals and you like comedy, then the team promise you will love The Totally Improvised Musical.
