‘I Know a Guy’, performed by Amsterdam-based Irish comedian Sharon Em, is at the Leicester Comedy Festival for two performances.
Her mother’s mysterious illness meant that, after Sharon was born, they were not allowed any contact for… a while. When the time did eventually come for her to ‘move in’ (her mother’s words) it was not the smoothest of transitions, since those who had initially looked after her were unwilling to give her back. How else to solve this problem than have her kidnapped?! All before her mother’s mystery illness was revealed… Spoiler: everyone is fine!
The show is a light-hearted, layered and well-crafted look at a family secret that, when revealed, made Sharon think very differently about her own life and relationships and how she dealt with rejection – even by goths! Making her reconsider many previous decisions and consider how she could have used this information to her advantage.

The show debuted at Edinburgh Fringe in 2024 and was longlisted for Best Debut by the ISH/Jones Bootmakers Awards jury.
‘I Know a Guy’ explores the universal threads that tie us all together; the influence of family and upbringing and the need for connection and belonging – and how they don’t always work harmoniously together. It’s stand up with a woven narrative, looking at themes of family and how early bonds influence attachments throughout life and relationships.
Drawing from a diverse array of anecdotes, the show navigates the intricacies of transforming personal stories into a shared narrative, transcending backgrounds and experiences.
Sharon Em is the writer/ performer, and described as ‘the funny Irish woman’ meandering her way through life and the planet, rarely with purpose or direction, disproving the theory that not all who wander are lost.
