Cults ‘To The Ghosts’ Album Review
These are interesting times for New York indie pop duo Cults who recently kickstarted the run in to the release of their new album ‘To The Ghosts’ by being asked to contribute a remix of Taylor Swift’s track “Fortnight”. Now, let’s be honest, it’s not often you get asked submit a remix for one of the biggest pop stars on the planet so you could say the New York duo are doing enough to get noticed. One listen to their haunting new album, ‘To The Ghosts’, and it’s easy to see why the indie-pop pair are gliding their way into everybody’s attention.
Opening with the mesmerizing “Crybabys”, the pair follow it up with the equally hypnotic “Left My Keys”, by which point you will have a good understanding of what to expect from the pair and this record as a whole. Rarely veering from their luscious soundscapes, Cults deliver a dreamy, layered sound for their fifth album and, while there is not much in the way of curveballs, listening to the likes of “Eat It Cold” and “Cells”, longtime fans of the duo will find comfort in the familiarity of their cinematic indie pop.
Later this year Cults will be heading out on the road for an extensive US tour supporting indie favourites Vampire Weekend. Listening to the playful indie-pop of “Crystal” or the more expensive sounds of album closer “Hung The Moon”, if you’re Stateside this Autumn and are lucky enough to grab a ticket for one of the shows, you won’t be disappointed if you head down early to submerse yourself in some of these effortlessly hypnotic songs in the flesh.
