Till the Morning – The debut solo album from Brian D’Addario of The Lemon Twigs review by Ryan Beardsley.
‘If you don’t listen to The Lemon Twigs, shame on you. A solo record from the more sensitive side of the D’Addario bros is a welcome surprise, but is there enough to differentiate between a solo project and a band at the very peak of its powers?
I’d say just about. It’s the softer side brought to the fore, choc full of achingly beautiful pop ballads that showcase Brian’s exquisite vocals. We don’t even necessarily have to lose the beloved harmonies that make The Twigs so wonderful, but sadly these loops wouldn’t work in a live setting.
The title track has the signature catchy chorus that we’ve come to love and expect, whilst Song of Everyone is reflective of the more contemplative moments and yearning for the intangible that Brain does so well.
We get the trademark inventiveness and experimentation, One Day I’m Coming Home veers down the Country route which is of course very in right now, it’s probably the album highlight and hints at exciting things to come.
This Summer encapsulates why Brian D’Addario and his band haven captured so many hearts over the last decade, jangly guitars, post modern lyrics this time about taking one’s own life but wrapped up in a tune so jaunty you could be forgiven for mistaking it for a lost Smiths single.
But D’Addario Snr has always excelled on the ballads and none more so here then on What You Are Is Beautiful, with a vocal full of anguish that tugs at the heart strings as the delicate guitar plucking marries perfectly with the pangs of pain.
So if you love The Lemon Twigs and in particular the lighter side of their work, there is a ton to appreciate here, the gauntlet has been laid down for his little brother now, this could get exciting…’
