One word sums up the vibe of this, the fourth album from New Jersey’s Bleachers and that word is nostalgic. The thoughts and views of frontman Jack Antonoff, this fourteen-track self-titled offering is the sound of his New Jersey-viewed take on modern life, culture and the things he cares about.
It’s an album of moods that captures moments in time through relaxed, chilled, easy-to-digest pop rock. Swerving between sadness and joy, the self-titled journey has a track for almost every occasion. “Jesus Is Dead” for example takes you back to the 80s pop era while, barely a couple of minutes later and, shutting your eyes, “me before you” transports you onto a quiet smoky dancefloor as you head into the final moments of a Saturday night clubbing back in the day.
Having worked as a songwriter and producer with the likes of Taylor Swift and The 1975 amongst others, there is no doubting Antonoff’s credibility as some with an ear for a good pop tune. However, what Bleachers shows, is that he is a master of the art of turning those intimate personal thoughts into his own top quality pop anthems. The raw honesty of “woke up today” is an example of how far removed from his work as a producer his own work is while “we are going to get to know each other forever” is just whistful 80s-drenched romantic pop which, like the rest of this album, will paint a large nostalgic smile across your face.
