Biig Piig ‘11:11’ Album Review by Graham Finney.
Having made her name with a string of EPs and singles, the Irish-born, London-based alt-pop newcomer Biig Piig turns her attention to the release of her debut album ‘11:11’. Promising a deeply personal collection of songs, you press start on ‘11:11’ hoping to find an artist pushing the boundaries of the alt-pop scene.
Following on from her acclaimed ‘Bubblegum’ mixtape which saw her exploring inspiration from the club scene, ‘11:11’ arrives off the back of a journey of self-discovery, travelling the globe and generally navigating the rollercoaster world of life. Unsurprisingly that journey results in an album that is varied, emotional and honest.
Her soft, ethereal voice, almost soothing in delivery is gentle yet powerful and confident. Overlaying a sound that flits from the pulsing electronic beats of recent single “Decimal” to the calmer “One Way Ticket”, Biig Piig’s ability to think outside the box and not restrict herself to the usual alt-pop stereotypes has, unsurpisingly seen her labelled as an innovator of the genre and, as ‘11:11’ weaves it’s emotional spell, it’s hard to disagree.
The tone of the album is set right from opener “4AM”, where Biig Piig pulls you into a world where, despite the calmness, there is always a unmissable, pulsating heartbeat driving away underneath the surface. “Cynical” is where Biig Piig really starts to experiment with the genre as quirky effects hang off the slightly more uptempo feel of the song.
Throughout this album, when you find her most stripped back and emotional, Biig Piig shows herself to be the kind of artist that really knows how to tap into emotion and honesty. That being said, tracks like the more upbeat “9-5” show that she hasn’t completely shifted away from the club inspired sounds of some of her previous material.
In a world that has given us the likes of Billie Eilish, labelling Biig Piig as a pop innovator is heaping a lot of expectation on her shoulders. However, in the case of ‘11:11’, Biig Piig has proved herself to be more than up to delivering what is expected and then some. ‘11:11’ is an album of moods that flit between the highs and lows and traversing life. The fact that Biig Piig has captured them so perfectly on this album really does set her up to be one of the artists to kick down the boundaries of pop music in 2025.
