Back in 2021, Beabadoobee performed at Leeds Beckett University on her ‘Fake It Flowers’ Tour. One thing stuck in my mind during witnessing the hysteria at that gig that was how close the profile of the singer-songwriter was to exploding. The gig was sold-out and, since then, Beabadoobee has gone on to more sold-out tours and huge festival headline appearances. With the trajectory of her career heading in one direction, Beabadoobee is readying herself for the release of the new album and, listening to the album there is one particular moment where she crosses into star status.

That moment comes midway through ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ when she delivers a truly jaw-dropping performance during “Girl Song”. A piano-led song, the intimacy of “Girl Song” is so huge you could close your eyes and almost imagine it being the only sound you could hear ringing around a sold-out arena. If ever there was a moment where you could visibly hear someone’s career shifting, that was the moment right there.

Now, “Girl Song” isn’t the only moment of pure pop brilliance from Beabadoobe. ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ is littered with great examples of quality bedroom pop. From the catchy, jangly opener, and recent single, “Take A Bite”, ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ has the confidence of an artist who has toured the world supporting Taylor Swift and worked with legendary producers like Rick Rubin. Now twenty-three years old, tracks like the edgy, grunge alt-rock of “Post”, the gentler tones of “The Man Who Left Too Soon” and the jangly alt-pop of “Everseen” all showcase a more mature songwriter than the seventeen-year-old who burst onto the scene six years ago and, in all honesty, has never looked back since.

‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ hurtles the London pop star up the ladder to stardom and, on the evidence of this wonderfully crafted collection of alt-pop poems, she can’t be too far off the top now. Looking back to that packed-out gig in Leeds as the final notes of this album play out, it’s hard to deny this success is anything other than unsurprising but truly deserved.
